The A6M Zero Type 52 "A" (commonly known as the Zero Fighter Type 52A) featured an increased ammunition capacity for the Zero Fighter Type 52's 20mm machine gun. The original Type 52's wing-mounted Type 99 20mm No. 2 Model 3 machine guns were mounted in drum magazines with a capacity of 100 rounds per gun, but the Type 52A was modified to use belt-fed Type 4 ammunition with a capacity of 125 rounds. To accommodate this, a trapezoidal cover was added to the base of the 20mm machine gun protrusion on the leading edge of the wing. The original Type 52 also featured a teardrop-shaped bulge under the wing to accommodate the drum magazine, but the Type 52A eliminated this bulge due to the belt-fed design. Furthermore, all Mitsubishi Type 52A models feature a short heat-resistant plate at the outlet of the thrust-type single exhaust pipe, a characteristic of Mitsubishi's designs.
