When Iraq invaded Kuwait in August 1990, the US Navy responded by deploying its carrier task force to the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea. In addition to their primary role of fleet air defense, F-14 fighters also played an active role in escorting attack aircraft. However, Iraqi aircraft, which had suffered serious losses at the hands of Iranian Air Force F-14s during the Iran-Iraq War, fled without taking any hostile action when they heard the radar sounds emitted by US Navy F-14s, and the US Navy F-14s were not able to achieve significant results in this Gulf War. The decals include one each from VF-32 "Swordsmen" and VF-102 "Diamondbacks" who participated in this Gulf War, as well as markings for an aircraft that shot down a Libyan MiG-23 in a battle between the US Navy and the Libyan Air Force that occurred over the Gulf of Sidra in 1989 (the Gulf of Sidra incident).
