Historical background:
In the 1980s, FG.1 Phantoms were based primarily at RAF Leuchars, providing QRA (Quick Reaction Alert) coverage against Soviet aircraft over the North Sea. These aircraft were transferred from the Royal Navy to the RAF after the retirement of aircraft carriers. They replaced the aging Lightning interceptors with more capable, longer-range fighters.
