The Cromwell Mk IV arrived in Normandy as one of the fastest and most agile tanks available to British and Commonwealth armoured units. For the D-Day landings and the buildup that followed, many Cromwells were equipped with deep-wading trunks, large vertical ducts fitted to the engine intakes and exhaust. These allowed the tanks to drive off landing craft into several feet of water, ensuring they could reach the beaches even when landing conditions were unfavorable. Although Cromwells were not used as the first wave on 6 June, their wading capability was crucial for subsequent landings and for securing a constant flow of armoured reinforcements onto the expanding beachheads.

Once ashore, tank crews removed the bulky wading gear as quickly as possible, since the added height and weight hindered mobility and made the tanks easier targets. In the bocage country of Normandy, the Cromwell Mk IV’s speed was less of an advantage, but its reliable engine and low profile were appreciated during reconnaissance and flanking operations. Tanks that had undergone deep-wading often required extra maintenance due to saltwater exposure, yet they remained an essential part of British armoured brigades. Their presence—fresh from the surf with wading trunks still attached—became a characteristic image of the post-D-Day build-up in northern France.
